Streamline FAIRness, interconnectivity and machine actionability across the Planning, Tracking and Assessing  phases of research.

OSTrails

Co-develop and test fit-for-purpose pathways and solutions for FAIRness and machine actionability in planning-tracking-assessing across domains and national settings.

Vision

OSTrails is creating a more connected and open research environment. One where researchers and institutions can confidently plan, track, and assess their work using tools that work together seamlessly. The project's goal is to make research more transparent, reusable, and efficient by applying FAIR principles across every stage of the research process.

How

OSTrails brings together 41 partners from 17 countries, including the five EOSC Science Clusters, to test practical solutions for improving research planning, monitoring, and evaluation. Through 25 pilot initiatives and the integration of over 80 tools via its Plan-Track-Assess (PTA) Framework, the project is building a scalable and adaptable foundation for Open Science across diverse research contexts.

Why

Many research support tools and systems still operate in isolation when managing planning, tracking, and assessment workflows. This fragmentation leads to duplicated effort, limited visibility, and reduced opportunities to share and reuse knowledge across institutional and disciplinary boundaries. While significant progress has been made within individual research organisations and infrastructures, there is still no widely accepted overarching framework for planning, tracking, and assessing research that supports high-quality science and effective collaboration.
