Session: Supporting the research data management workflow from start to finish through RAiD
Abstract: The Dutch National pilot within the OSTrails project explores how machine actionable data management plans (maDMPs) can support researchers and research institutions in keeping knowledge connected. The work in the pilot is covering two broad aspects: (1) the affordances of machine actionability in research data management and (2) the contextualisation of digital objects within the research ecosystem through linking various PIDs. In this short presentation we will focus on three of the six deliverables in the pilot:
- PID-ifying DMP templates
- Interoperating machine actionable DMPs via RAiD
- Extending scientific knowledge graph with DMPs
DMPs play a multifaceted role in the research process, one of them being a place where project information is captured during the planning phase of research. Through the integration of RAiD in this early phase we ensure that PIDs are captured early on, so that an open and up-to-date record of the project is findable and accessible. Candidate PIDs in this workflow are GrantIDs for funding, ORCIDs for project members, but also DOIs of datasets that are being reused in the project. In addition, the DMP itself can be included in the RAiD record so that it remains discoverable throughout and after the project. This approach is built on the logic that research information (including PIDs) should flow naturally as a by-product of research, not as an administrative afterthought. It draws inspiration from the concept behind the RAiD identifier service, where research context is enriched through linking different PIDs dynamically over time rather than recorded only at the end of a project, or when reporting is required.
In this short presentation we demonstrate this workflow using a prototype and discuss the challenges that we foresee for institutions wanting to implement maDMPs and RAiD.

Poster: The OSTrails Project (2024-2027)
Description: This poster presents work pursued in the EU-funded project OSTrails (ostrails.eu), in which several CLARIN nodes participate as beneficiary. OSTrails will deliver methods, tools, services, guidance and training necessary for putting the FAIR principles into practice. OSTrails aims to contribute to the streamlining of data FAIRness, service interoperability and machine actionability across the various stages of research, in particular planning, tracking and assessing. The overall goal is to improve and extend existing infrastructural ecosystems and to align them with EOSC.
A major focus is on the development of an interoperability framework (IF) for Scientific Knowledge Graphs (SKGs). The SKG-IF is envisaged to facilitate the discoverability and interoperability of research products and infrastructures. Several national pilots and thematic pilots (covering all science domains) are part of the project work plan. The CLARIN thematic pilot focusses on offering the metadata available via the VLO, to machines, via the OSTrails API for the SKG-IF.

Workshop: From Planning to Working: Using OSTrails interoperablity frameworks to connect RDMO and electronic lab notebooks
Objective: The objective of this session is to evaluate the practical interoperability of machine-actionable data management plans (maDMPs) created with RDMO and electronic lab notebooks (ELNs). Through hands-on testing, participants will apply the current mapping between DMPs and ELNs and provide feedback on the resulting structures, including what is useful, missing, or potentially misleading. The session will also explore potential feedback loops from ELNs back to DMPs to identify practical solutions for improving research data management throughout the research lifecycle.

Session: Data Management Plans and FAIR Assessment
Title: Community Metrics and Automated Assessment of Machine-Actionable Data Management Plans
Abstract: Data Management Plans (DMPs) are mandated by funders as instruments for promoting FAIR data practice, yet evaluating their quality remains labour-intensive and does not scale. Machine-actionable DMP (maDMPs), structured according to the RDA DMP Common Standard, open the door to automated assessment, but a community grounded, openly published catalog of evaluation criteria has so far been missing. This paper presents three contributions made within the OSTrails project.
First, we describe a participatory co-design methodology through which practitioners, tool developers, and funder representatives elicited evaluation criteria grounded in real-world DMP workflows.
Second, we present the resulting DMP Evaluation Metrics Catalogue that contains 94 metrics formalised as linked-data records using the FAIR Testing Results (FTR) vocabulary, anchored to RDA DCS schema fields.
Third, we demonstrate automated evaluation of maDMPs against community specific benchmarks, showing that a substantial portion of the catalogue can be applied as deterministic, externally validated tests returning machine-readable, field-level feedback for researchers, data stewards, and funders.

This workshop brings together developers and users of electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs) and the OSTrails project to explore how ELN workflows can connect with the OSTrails infrastructure for machine-actionable data management plans (maDMPs), scholarly knowledge graphs (SKGs), and FAIR assessment.
The event originates from a concrete use case: the German national pilot within OSTrails, led by RWTH Aachen University, where RDMO is being connected with the Chemotion Electronic Lab Notebook and repository to serve the NFDI4Chem and NFDI4Ing communities. The pilot focuses on creating machine-actionable DMP templates with embedded FAIR metrics, establishing qualified references between DMPs and lab notebooks, and enabling interoperability with the OpenAIRE Graph. The discussion in Braga during the Train-the-Trainer Bootcamp highlighted the broader relevance of this work for the project and the open science community at large.
ELNs are a critical point in the research data lifecycle. They are environments where researchers record experimental processes, capture data provenance, and generate the artefacts that DMPs are meant to track. Yet the connection between ELN systems and DMP tools remains largely manual and inconsistent. OSTrails' interoperability framework, spanning the DMP Interconnection Framework (DMP-IF), the SKG Interoperability Framework (SKG-IF), and FAIR Assessment capabilities, offers a principled basis for addressing this gap. This workshop is a first step towards mapping touching points, understanding each other's architectures, and identifying concrete collaboration opportunities.

Everybody from the OSTrails project is invited to join. The workshop might be especially interesting for people, who want to know more about the functionalities of ELNs and possible interconnections with the work done in OSTrails.

The OSTrails pilot from the University of Minho will be presented at the Dataverse Community Annual Meeting, 12–15 May 2026 in Barcelona, introducing the FAIR Reference Model and highlighting its real-world application through the DataRepositóriUM repository. Attendees will gain insights into how FAIR benchmarks can be used to assess and improve dataset compliance, as well as how repositories can align with FAIR principles to strengthen data quality and impact.
